How to Find Calm When Life Feels Overwhelming – Returning Home to Yourself When life feels overwhelming, it can seem as though everything is changing at once. Stress, uncertainty, and difficult emotions can pull us away from ourselves, leaving us reacting instead of responding. Yet even in life’s stormiest moments, there is a quiet place within where we can pause, breathe, and find calm again. What Does It Mean to Return Home to Yourself? Returning home to yourself means reconnecting with your inner calm, practising self-love, healing old emotional patterns, and learning to respond with awareness instead of reacting from past wounds. How to Come Back to Yourself Self-love isn’t about feeling wonderful all the time. Sometimes it is simply choosing to speak kindly to yourself when you make a mistake, allowing yourself to rest, acknowledging that something hurts, or saying, “This is difficult, and I am going to be gentle with myself while I move through it.” Healing begins when we stop abandoning ourselves in the moments when we need ourselves most. Many of the beliefs, thoughts, and patterns we carry were formed through our earlier experiences, often before we had the awareness to question them. Becoming conscious of these patterns allows us to gently choose something different. Inner Child Healing: Reconnecting with Yourself Your inner child carries your earliest experiences, emotions, dreams, fears, and vulnerability. Sometimes healing means gently turning towards that younger part of yourself and asking: “What did I need then that I didn’t receive? What did I need to hear? What can I give myself now?“ You might imagine sitting beside your younger self and saying: “I see you. I hear you. You are safe with me. I am here now.” Healing doesn’t mean changing the past. It means changing the way you hold the past within you. How to Stop Reacting Emotionally You don’t have to become the storm. One of the most powerful things we can learn is that what happens around us doesn’t have to become what happens within us. Someone else’s anger doesn’t have to become your anger. Someone else’s fear doesn’t have to become your fear. Think of the calm at the centre of a storm. The storm is still there, but at its centre there is stillness. That place exists within you too. The Power of the Pause When we are triggered, our instinct can be to react—to defend ourselves, withdraw, blame, or say something we later regret. But a space exists between what happens and what we do next. That space is the pause. One of the simplest ways to find it is through your breath. A Simple Breathing Exercise for Anxiety and Overwhelm When you notice yourself becoming overwhelmed, place both feet comfortably on the ground. Breathe slowly in through your nose for four counts, then gently breathe out for six counts. Repeat several times without forcing the breath. As you breathe in, silently say: “I am here.” As you breathe out: “I am safe in this moment.” Allow your shoulders to soften and your jaw to relax. Then ask yourself: “What is actually needed from me in this moment?” This simple pause creates space between the emotion and your response. Respond Instead of React A reaction can come from an old wound, fear, belief, or protective pattern. A response comes from the present moment. You may still be angry. You may still be hurt. You may still need to establish a boundary or have a difficult conversation. Being calm doesn’t mean allowing others to mistreat you. It means meeting the moment from a place of greater awareness rather than allowing the moment to take control of you. Sometimes the most loving response is to speak. Sometimes it is to step away. Sometimes it is simply to wait until you feel centred before deciding what comes next. Become Your Own Safe Place Listen to the way you speak to yourself. Would you speak to someone you love in the same way? Instead of “I can’t cope with this,” try: “This is difficult, but I can take this one moment at a time.” Instead of “I always get this wrong,” try: “I am learning, and I am allowed to make mistakes.” These aren’t simply positive words. They are opportunities to become aware of the beliefs beneath them and gently choose something kinder. And remember, nurturing yourself isn’t only about healing what hurts. Your inner child also needs joy, play, creativity, rest, nature, laughter, and moments where you can simply be. Ask yourself: What brought me joy before I became so busy being an adult? Perhaps it is time to invite a little of that back into your life. Returning Home to Yourself The goal isn’t to reach a place where nothing ever bothers you. Life will still happen. People will disappoint you, plans will change, and difficult emotions will arise. Healing doesn’t make us immune to life. It teaches us how to stay connected to ourselves while moving through it. You can feel something without becoming it. You can experience fear without allowing it to make every decision. You can love others without abandoning yourself. And when the world becomes noisy, you can pause, breathe, and remember: I am here. I can breathe. I can choose. I can come back to myself. Perhaps this is what returning home to yourself truly means—not becoming someone new, but remembering who you have always been. Home is within you. When an Animal Leaves Our Side: Navigating the Journey of Grief
There are few experiences in life as deeply painful as saying goodbye to a beloved animal companion. The love we share with our animals is unlike any other—pure, unconditional, and free from expectation. They accept us exactly as we are, standing beside us through life’s greatest joys and its darkest moments with unwavering love and loyalty. When they leave the physical world, it can feel as though a part of our own heart has gone with them. For many people, the loss of an animal can be just as profound—and sometimes even more so—than the loss of a human loved one. Yet this depth of grief is not always understood by others. Well-meaning comments such as, “It was only a dog,” or “You can always get another one,” can unintentionally deepen the pain of someone who is already carrying an immense sense of loss. Our animals are never “just” animals. They are family, companions, teachers, healers, and soul friends. They walk beside us through seasons of change, witness our tears and our triumphs, and love us without judgement. The bond we share leaves an imprint on our hearts that continues long after they have crossed into Spirit. Grief is a deeply personal journey, and there is no right or wrong way to experience it. There is no timeline to follow and no expectation of when you should “move on.” Every emotion that arises—whether sadness, anger, guilt, regret, relief, or even moments of peace—is a natural expression of love. The more we allow ourselves to acknowledge these feelings with compassion, the more gently healing can begin to unfold. One of the greatest gifts we can offer ourselves, or someone who is grieving, is simply to create space for the pain to be witnessed. We do not need to have the perfect words or offer solutions. We simply need to listen with an open heart, allowing grief to be expressed without judgement, comparison, or expectation. There is an important difference between sympathy, empathy, and compassion. Sympathy acknowledges another’s pain. Empathy allows us to step into their experience and truly feel alongside them. Compassion goes one step further—it is empathy in action, offering kindness, presence, and gentle support when it is needed most. Our animals are often our greatest source of comfort. They greet us with joy, sit quietly beside us in difficult moments, and offer a love that asks for nothing in return. When they leave, the silence they leave behind can feel overwhelming. It is only natural that healing takes time. Although grief changes us, so too does love. The relationship you shared with your animal does not end when they leave the physical world. The love, the memories, the lessons, and the soul connection remain woven into who you are. In time, the sharpness of grief softens, making space for gratitude, cherished memories, and the quiet comfort of knowing that love is never truly lost. As we honour both our grief and the extraordinary souls who shared our lives, we begin to understand that healing is not about letting go—it is about learning to carry love in a new way. “Compassion is not about taking away someone’s pain. It is about walking beside them while they find the strength to carry it.”

Helping your animals at the end of life
How do animals view death? Are they afraid of death? The answer here is no. Animals do not see death as we do. As humans we are very afraid of the unknown and so death for us can be a terrifying thought. Animals live very much in the moment and are very attuned with their own bodies and with the cycles and rhythms of life. They understand that death is a part of this cycle. They understand that as soul beings, they are eternal and that it is just the physical body that dies. They understand that the soul never dies and when transitioning over they are moving from one plane to another. They are returning home so to speak. Very often animals hold onto life for their humans. They will do whatever they can to help us and for us not to feel grief or pain so they will hold on as long as they can or until they know that their humans are emotionally ready to deal with their transition. Another thing that animals do not want from us is pity and sympathy. They want us to hold them in empathy. If we are constantly feeling sorry for our animals, we are not being present with them in this space and time. By preparing ourselves emotionally ahead of time we can honour our animals during this time, we can be supportive and caring and we can embrace the time that we do have with them. So often we as humans carry a lot of guilt about the death of their beloved animal friends. We wonder if we did the right thing by euthanising the animal, if the time was right, did we do it too early or should we have waited. By asking our animals, through intuitive animal communication, what they would like we can alleviate the pain and suffering that we go through. Our animals do not want us to have regrets. they do not want us to carry guilt and blame. The best way to approach the process is to be prepared, have an open heart and have an open mind. Remember that it is the soul choice of the animal as to whether it stays in its physical form or decides to leave to cross into the world of spirit. However, you can make the transition process easier and more comfortable for your animal while at the same time honouring their life, their choices and their death. Sit quietly and find your center. Make the connection with your animal and sit in that space of reverence and love with them. you can then ask them the following questions: • How will I know when it is time for you to leave? What signs can and will you give me so that I know for sure?• Would you like to go on your own or would you like assistance? If they say they would like assistance, ask them how they would like this to happen. Very often they know exactly what they want.• Do you want me to be present? Who would you like to be present?• Would you like to be buried and if so where? What would you like us to do with your body?• Do you want to be cremated and if so what would like us to do with your ashes? To most animals after they leave their physical body these wishes are expressed because they know that it will help the humans and just as in life even in death they will continue to do what they can to help their humans. Once this has all been established it is then time to honour what the animal has given to you. It does not help to ask these questions and then to do something different. This is where unconditional love comes in. We have to love them so unconditionally that we are willing to let them go and this also means releasing them emotionally. This consciously frees the animal to let go and not feel that he has to stay because you are not ready. After they have gone Grief is very real and you must express, acknowledge and feel your grief. Talk about it with people you know will love and support you during this time and if need be seek out the services of a bereavement or grief therapist. There are various stages to grief and these go from shock, denial, anger, guilt, depression, sadness and acceptance. These stages do not always happen in this order and you may fluctuate between them. The grieving process is different for each person and is unique. There is no wrong or right and it can take as long as it needs to. The death and loss of an animal friend can often be more traumatic then the loss of a human friend or relative and one of the reasons for this is because they love us so unconditionally. There are never expectations and you are given the freedom and the encouragement to be exactly as you are. This is one of the great lessons that they teach us and part of the grieving process is to love them unconditionally enough to let them go.
